The entertainment industry, including acting, is a challenging field for Christians to navigate. On one hand, acting and entertainment can be used for good purposes to bring joy, meaning, and thought-provoking stories to audiences. God gifted us with creativity and the ability to perform. However, the lure of fame, wealth, questionable content, and ungodly influences can also make this industry fraught with spiritual danger.
What does the Bible say about acting and entertainment? Unfortunately, Scripture does not directly address careers in the arts and performance. However, there are some biblical principles we can apply when considering this field:
1. Be in the world, but not of it
Jesus calls believers to be in the world but not of it (John 17:14-16). Christians working in entertainment need to understand they will be working in an industry that is largely secular and sometimes even opposed to biblical values. It’s crucial to be vigilant against compromising one’s faith and conduct in order to gain success or approval. At the same time, Christians can work to have a godly influence in the industry rather than isolating from it completely.
2. Be ready to face temptation and persecution
Sinful temptations abound in the quest for fame and success in arts and entertainment. Pride, greed, lust, substance abuse, and unethical behavior can crop up and need to be guarded against (1 Peter 5:8-9). Standing up for biblical principles may also invite ridicule and persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). So Christians in this field need to be spiritually prepared and supported.
3. Maintain ethical integrity
Actors often portray characters in morally questionable situations. Biblical values like modesty and purity can be challenged as well. Christians need to thoughtfully establish boundaries based on conscience and God’s word when choosing roles and performing (Titus 1:15-16, 1 Corinthians 10:31). They should refuse roles requiring nudity, harsh profanity, explicit sexuality, or condoning immorality.
4. Be discerning about content
Just as an actor evaluates scripts for ethical issues, Christians connected with any entertainment role should exercise discernment. Does the production as a whole endorse, normalize, or glamorize sinful lifestyles and ideology contrary to biblical standards? Or does it thoughtfully raise awareness of human struggles? Prayerfully consider what messages you are promoting through a project (Philippians 4:8).
5. Steward gifts and platform well
Acting and other entertainment professions can provide a public platform and unique opportunities to influence culture. Christians in this field have a responsibility to be thoughtful stewards of their gifts and influence. Perform excellently, champion creative projects aligned with biblical values, and look for opportunities to be a light for Christ (Matthew 5:16, Colossians 3:23).
6. Maintain a strong spiritual foundation
Consistent prayer, church community, and time in God’s word are essential for anyone desiring to honor Christ in a largely secular industry. Accountability partnerships are also crucial safeguards against compromise. Pursuing fame and success shouldn’t trump nurturing one’s relationship with God and others (Luke 12:15, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).
7. Consider your motivations
Why does a performing career appeal to you? Make sure pride and selfish ambition aren’t driving you. Talent can become an idol if craving the applause of others overtakes pleasing God. Evaluate whether this profession aligns with the purpose God has for your life. Be willing to walk away if it inhibits your faith or calls you towards unethical behavior (Jeremiah 29:11, James 4:13-17).
8. Weigh your priorities
An entertainment career demands much time and mental energy. Make sure your devotion to God, family, and church community still retain proper priority amid busy schedules and long work days (Matthew 6:33). Be wise in setting boundaries and deciding what roles to accept. It’s okay to sometimes say no if taking on too much threatens your spiritual wellbeing.
9. Seek balance and rest
Heavy workloads and high stress often accompany entertainment professions. Without proper boundaries, burnout is likely. Follow God’s model and set aside a Sabbath day for physical and spiritual rejuvenation. Get adequate sleep and take vacations as your schedule allows. Make time for relationships and hobbies beyond work as well (Exodus 20:8-11).
10. Rely on grace and wisdom
Navigating an entertainment career while staying true to biblical values presents challenges at times. When you fail, don’t give in to condemnation but humbly receive God’s grace and get back on the right path (Proverbs 24:16). Also pray for and cultivate wisdom to handle dilemmas you encounter with integrity (James 1:5).
In summary, acting and careers in the arts and entertainment are not prohibited for Christians. But wisdom, prayer, thoughtfulness of conscience, and relying on God’s grace and truth are essential to thrive in this industry without compromising one’s Christian witness and integrity. With caution and care, it’s possible for believers to engage these fields redemptively and skillfully for God’s glory.
