Soul winning is the act of sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ with others, with the goal of leading them to salvation. For Christians, it is considered an important calling and responsibility. However, it can also seem daunting, and many believers struggle to feel motivated to regularly engage in evangelism and outreach. Fortunately, the Bible offers much wisdom and encouragement on this topic. Here are some biblical keys to becoming more motivated for soul winning:
Pray for God to Give You His Heart for the Lost
We should start by asking God to soften our own hearts and open our eyes to the spiritual need around us. Pray for Him to break your heart with what breaks His – the reality that so many people are lost and headed for an eternity separated from God (Luke 19:10; Matthew 9:36-38). Plead for Him to give you His compassion and urgency to reach the lost. The more our hearts align with God’s heart, the more motivated we will be to share the good news.
Meditate on the Reality of Heaven and Hell
It’s easy to become complacent about evangelism. But we must remember that heaven and hell are very real. Take time to meditate on the eternal significance of someone coming to faith, as well as the horrors of hell (Luke 16:19-31). Ask God to give you an eternal perspective and remind you that life is fleeting. When we live with the reality of eternity in view, it instills in us a sense of urgency to speak the truth in love to those who don’t know Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:11).
Remember It’s All by Grace
We can wrongly believe our efforts are what will save someone, when in reality only the Holy Spirit can open hearts to receive the gospel (1 Corinthians 3:7; John 6:44). Witnessing is simply planting and watering seeds – the growth is up to God. Remembering salvation is all by grace takes the pressure off us. We simply need to be faithful to share the truth in love as we rely on Him to change hearts (Ephesians 2:8-10).
Know You Don’t Need to Have All the Answers
We may avoid witnessing because we feel ill-equipped to answer tough questions or defend our beliefs. However, we simply need to be willing to point people to Christ – the Holy Spirit and Bible will do the rest! We can admit what we don’t know while directing people to explore the truth of Christ (Colossians 4:5-6; 1 Peter 3:15). It’s about extending the invitation, not having all the answers.
Remember It’s a Privilege Not a Burden
Sharing Christ should flow from joy, not guilt or obligation. Witnessing is a privilege – we get to participate in the most important work on earth! Thank God for choosing to use you. Ask Him to give you His heart of delight in seeing people come to salvation (Luke 15; 3 John 1:4). Gratitude fuels passion.
Understand the Power of God’s Word
God promises that His word will not return void but will accomplish His purposes (Isaiah 55:11). Trust that simply sharing Scripture, your testimony, and the gospel message is enough. It’s about sowing seeds – the Word of God has power to take root and change lives (Romans 10:17). You don’t need to overthink it.
Rely on the Spirit to Empower You
On our own we lack both the wisdom and power to win souls. But Jesus promised the Holy Spirit will empower us (Luke 12:11-12; Acts 1:8). Ask Him to embolden and equip you. Listen for His guidance in every conversation. Yield to the Spirit working through you – He knows just what people need to hear.
Set Aside Regular Time
Don’t just wait for witnessing opportunities to arise. Be proactive in setting aside regular time to share Christ – whether going door-to-door, striking up conversations, or serving your community while looking to turn talks toward spiritual matters. Setting aside intentional time fuels consistency and effectiveness.
Go with Others
Serving alongside other believers provides encouragement, support, and motivation. Seek out evangelism ministries at your church or form an outreach group among Christian friends. Going with others boosts passion and multiplies impact as you witness together (Luke 10:1).
Start Local
Global missions are vital, but don’t miss the lost right around you – your family, coworkers, neighbors, cashiers at the store, waiters at your regular spot, etc. Pray for and seek to build relationships with those the Lord has already put in your path then look for opportunities to share the gospel.
Remember It’s About Relationship, Not Just a Sales Pitch
We can mistakenly see evangelism as sealing the deal in one conversation. But only through relationship can hearts truly be won to Christ. Make time for ongoing, caring conversations while consistently pointing people to the hope found in Him. In investing in others, our passion for seeing them believe grows.
Study the Lives of Great Evangelists
Read biographies of renowned evangelists like Billy Graham, George Whitefield, D.L. Moody, and Charles Spurgeon. Learn from their zeal, boldness, and devotion to sharing the gospel. Seeing how God used them to win many souls for Christ can reignite your own passion for witnessing.
Attend Conferences and Events Focused on Evangelism
Conferences and seminars focused on outreach, apologetics, and evangelism can provide valuable biblical teaching while also connecting you with others passionate about soul winning. Being immersed in that atmosphere with other believers seeking to reach the lost can ignite fresh motivation.
Remember We Were All Once Lost
It’s easy to forget we were also once unbelievers before someone cared enough to share Christ with us. Recalling your own story of coming to salvation can breed compassion. Understanding you’ve been given the gift of eternal life fuels a desire to share that gift with others still lost in darkness (Ephesians 2:1-10).
Trust God’s Promise to Reward Faithfulness
God assures us that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). If we are faithful in sowing gospel seeds, we will reap spiritual fruit and eternal rewards (Galatians 6:9; Daniel 12:3). God sees every act of witnessing. Lean on the promise that your loving efforts to share Christ, whether they seem “successful” or not, store up eternal blessings.
Keep Your Eyes on Christ
When our focus stays fixed on Jesus – stirred by His compassion, empowered by His Spirit, trusting in His power and faithfulness – our passion for the lost He loves so deeply cannot help but grow. “Looking to Jesus…who for the joy set before him endured the cross” fuels us to follow His example (Hebrews 12:2).
The task of evangelism may seem daunting, but God promises to equip and sustain us. As we prayerfully meditate on biblical truth, rely on the Spirit’s power, and keep our eyes fixed on Christ, He will give us His heart for the lost. Our motivation to boldly yet lovingly share the saving gospel message will ignite and grow. God can use even our faltering efforts to powerfully impact eternity. Will we say yes to the call and privilege of pointing others to the Savior?
