Addiction is a struggle that many people face, whether it be addiction to drugs, alcohol, pornography, or other vices. The Bible has much to say about addiction and offers hope, wisdom, and power to overcome it through faith in Jesus Christ.
Here are some key Bible verses about addiction:
1. We are all addicted to sin apart from Christ
“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.'” (John 8:34)
“For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.” (Titus 3:3)
These verses explain that apart from Christ, we are enslaved and addicted to all kinds of sin. Sin is highly addictive and leads to more sin. We are powerless to break free from sin’s grip on our own. We need a Savior.
2. Freedom from addiction is found in Christ
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
Jesus alone has the power to break the chains of addiction and set us free. When we repent and turn to Him in faith, He frees us from the penalty and power of sin.
3. We must flee temptation and pursue righteousness
“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” (1 Corinthians 6:18)
“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:14-16)
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.” (Titus 2:11-12)
God calls us to flee from temptation, pursue righteousness, and train ourselves to resist ungodliness. This takes self-discipline, accountability, prayer, studying Scripture, and the Spirit’s help.
4. Support from Christian community helps overcome addiction
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)
“Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:1-2)
God did not design us to overcome addiction alone. The body of Christ is crucial for support, prayer, accountability, wisdom, and bearing one another’s burdens.
5. Take drastic measures to kill addiction
“If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” (Matthew 5:29-30)
“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” (Colossians 3:5)
Addiction is so destructive that Jesus said to take extreme measures to destroy it. By God’s power, we must abstain completely from addictive behaviors and even take action to eliminate sources of temptation.
6. Trust God’s promises and care
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7)
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
In our weakness, God is strong. He promises to provide a way of escape from temptation. We can cast all our cares on Him because He loves us. He works all things for our good as we love and trust Him.
7. addiction demonstrates our need for God’s grace
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Our struggle with addiction humbles us and shows us our need for God’s strength. His grace is sufficient for us. In our weakness, we can find His perfect strength and sufficiency.
8. We have power to say no to temptation
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.” (Galatians 5:17)
Through the Spirit’s power, we can stand against temptation and choose to obey God instead of our fleshly desires. God gives us supernatural power to say no.
9. Fill your mind with truth and noble things
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11)
We can reprogram our addicted minds by filling them with God’s truth, meditating on Scripture, and focusing on excellent and praiseworthy things instead of temptation.
10. Pray for God’s help and deliverance
“Lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil.” (Matthew 6:13)
“Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.” (Psalm 19:13)
“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.” (1 Peter 3:12)
God hears our prayers and promises to deliver us from evil as we call out to Him. We should continually pray for help avoiding temptation and for freedom from addictive sins.
In summary, these key verses demonstrate we all struggle with addictive sin, but Jesus sets us free. We must flee temptation, fill our minds with truth, depend on God’s Spirit and grace, immerse ourselves in Christian community, take extreme measures against addiction, trust God’s promises and power to help us overcome, and continually pray for deliverance. With Christ, we can walk in freedom even from the strongest addictions.
