The Bible has a lot to say about the human soul. Here is an overview of some key Bible verses that discuss the nature, value, and eternal destiny of the soul.
The Nature of the Soul
The Bible teaches that human beings have both a physical body and an immaterial soul and spirit. Genesis 2:7 states that God “formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” This verse shows that we are more than just a physical body – God breathed an immaterial spirit/soul into man to bring him to life.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 also distinguishes between a human’s body, soul and spirit: “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” These verses indicate the soul is the immaterial part of a human that animates our physical bodies.
Jesus emphasized the distinction between the body and soul in Matthew 10:28: “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” This verse indicates that even after the body dies, the soul lives on.
The Value of the Soul
The Bible teaches that human souls have intrinsic value because they are made in God’s image. Genesis 1:27 states: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Even after mankind’s fall into sin, we maintain our status as image bearers of God, which gives all human life value (Genesis 9:6).
Jesus highlighted the value of human souls when he said, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26). Our souls are so valuable that nothing on earth can compare.
Knowing the pricelessness of human souls motivates Christians to spread the gospel. Paul writes, “I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings” (1 Corinthians 9:22-23). Every soul has eternal value.
The Eternal Destiny of the Soul
The Bible teaches the eternal existence of the soul. While a human’s body will eventually die, their soul will live forever. Jesus said, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). Our souls will consciously exist eternally somewhere.
The eternal destiny of the soul is determined in this life based on a person’s faith in Christ. John 3:16 declares, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Those who place their faith in Jesus will spend eternity with God in heaven.
However, those who reject Christ are condemned to eternal punishment. Matthew 25:46 warns, “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Hell is a real place of eternal torment for souls who reject God’s salvation through Christ (Luke 16:19-31).
Knowing the eternal weight of the soul motivates Christians to repent and put their faith in Christ while also urgently sharing the gospel with nonbelievers.
