The Bible has a lot to say about spiritual blessings and the many ways God blesses His people. At the core, spiritual blessings refer to the intangible, eternal gifts that God gives believers through faith in Jesus Christ. These blessings provide strength, growth and fulfillment beyond what this world can offer.
Some key spiritual blessings the Bible describes include:
Forgiveness of sins
One of the greatest spiritual blessings is the forgiveness of our sins through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. Ephesians 1:7 states, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.” When we put our faith in Christ, our slate is wiped completely clean before God. Our sins, past, present and future, are nailed to the cross and we are declared righteous before Him.
Eternal life
Along with forgiveness, God blesses us with the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. John 3:16 famously declares, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” This spiritual blessing allows our spirits to live forever in God’s presence when we leave our earthly bodies behind. Death no longer has a hold on us.
Adoption into God’s family
At salvation, we are adopted into God’s own family as His sons and daughters. Galatians 4:5-7 proclaims, “To redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” We become co-heirs with Jesus Christ himself, endowed with all the privileges of children of the King.
Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
The Bible also describes the permanent, internal dwelling of the Holy Spirit within believers once we are saved. 1 Corinthians 6:19 declares, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?” The Spirit guides us into truth, convicts us of sin, produces spiritual fruit within us, and gifts us to serve God and others. This abiding presence of the very Spirit of God is an incredible blessing.
Access to God through prayer
Through Christ, believers are given direct access to come boldly before God’s throne of grace in prayer. Hebrews 4:16 invites us, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Prayer is a hotline to God whereby we can make our petitions, intercessions and thanksgivings known to Him anytime.
Membership in Christ’s body
At salvation, we become members of the universal body of Christ, the church. 1 Corinthians 12:27 declares, “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” We are joined together with fellow believers across all nations, ages, cultures and backgrounds into one united spiritual family. We also have the blessing of belonging to a local church body.
Sanctification
The Bible promises that all believers will undergo sanctification, or the process of being made holy, through the indwelling Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says, “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Though not perfect, we are being continually conformed to the image of Christ.
Hope
Through Christ’s resurrection, we are given a living hope – the assurance that He is returning someday to make all things new and right. 1 Peter 1:3 praises God for this blessing: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” This firm hope sustains us amidst trials.
Purpose
God blesses believers with a sense of purpose, identity and meaningful work on this earth as we live for His glory. Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Our lives take on eternal significance when they are aligned with God’s kingdom purposes.
Joy
The joy of the Lord is described as a blessing that gives strength. Nehemiah 8:10 urges, “…do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” God fills our hearts with a deep and enduring joy found in Christ alone. His joy remains steadfast despite our changing circumstances.
Peace
Supernatural peace is a quiet confidence that surpasses human understanding. Philippians 4:7 promises, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This inner peace that reconciles us to God also arbitrates our relationships with others.
Contentment
Godliness with contentment is called gain. Believers can be content in Christ alone for our satisfaction. 1 Timothy 6:6 instructs, “Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment.” We are freed from restless striving after wealth, status and material abundance.
Courage
Enduring courage is a spiritual blessing that helps believers stand firm. Joshua 1:9 assures us, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” God infuses strength to face each day without crippling fear.
Stability
Soundness of mind is a gift of grace that anchors our emotions and thoughts. 2 Timothy 1:7 affirms, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” In turbulent times, our minds are kept steadfastly tethered to Christ the Rock.
Fruit of the Spirit
The Holy Spirit produces spiritual fruit in our lives such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Galatians 5:22-23 describes this blessing that conforms us to Christ’s image. This fruit flows from His life within us.
Gifts of the Spirit
Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers to build up the church. 1 Corinthians 12:7 states, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” Examples are encouragement, generosity, wisdom, healing, prophecy and more. These bless the church.
Victory over sin and death
Christ’s finished work on the cross achieved decisive victory over the powers of sin and death. 1 Corinthians 15:57 celebrates, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Sin’s power to enslave and condemn is broken. Eternal life triumphs over death.
Confidence
Godly confidence is a blessing that helps us press on despite weaknesses. 2 Corinthians 12:9 assures believers, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” His strength shines through human frailty.
Righteousness
Christ’s perfect righteousness is credited to our account at salvation so that we become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 declares, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” We stand faultless before Him, clothed in Jesus’ righteousness.
Transformation
Sanctification progressively transforms believers into Christ’s image from glory to glory. 2 Corinthians 3:18 explains, “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” Day by day, we reflect more of Him.
New Creation
In Christ, believers become new creations and the old has passed away. 2 Corinthians 5:17 proclaims, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Everything is made fresh and our lives start anew in Him.
Justification
Justification legally declares the guilty just through faith in Christ’s atoning work. Romans 5:1 reassures, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The Judge of all pardons our sins and credits Christ’s righteousness to us.
Grace
God’s unmerited favor and enabling power to do His will is abundant grace. 2 Corinthians 12:9 promises, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” No matter the trial, His provisions of grace never run dry.
Mercy
God’s tender, loving compassion abounds to believers who certainly don’t deserve it. Lamentations 3:22-23 praises God that “His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.” He withholds the judgment our sins warrant and instead showers us with mercy.
Helmet of Salvation
The assurance of salvation protects our thoughts against spiritual attack. Ephesians 6:17 describes “the helmet of salvation” that guards believers’ minds. Confidence in our secure position in Christ deflects condemning and accusing thoughts.
Sword of the Spirit
Scripture is a powerful, divinely potent offensive weapon. Ephesians 6:17 calls God’s word “the sword of the Spirit” which believers actively wield. Through memorization and meditation, passages cut through lies and slash through strongholds.
Armor of God
God spiritually arms believers with His full armor including the helmet of salvation, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, sword of the Spirit, belt of truth and shoes of the gospel. Ephesians 6:10-18 details these blessings provide protection.
Good works
While not saving, good works are spirit-empowered blessings believers walk in to glorify God. Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” He crafts unique vocations perfectly suited for each of His children to bless the world.
Every spiritual blessing
Ephesians 1:3 encapsulates the lavish generosity of God by pronouncing He “has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” No good thing does He withhold. The storehouses of heaven overflow to believers through our union with Christ.
This sampling of verses provides just a taste of the manifold spiritual blessings showered upon believers in Jesus Christ. They address every arena of life with insight, renewal and empowerment flowing from His boundless grace. These precious gifts impart strength, growth, guidance, meaning, stability, hope, courage, purpose and fulfillment that overflows into eternity. Through the Savior alone, we are richly blessed.
