The Bible teaches that God is infinite, unlimited, and unmeasurable. These attributes of God have profound implications for our understanding of who He is and how He relates to His creation.
God is Infinite
When we say God is infinite, we mean He has no limits or boundaries. There is no end to His being, knowledge, wisdom, power, presence, or any other attribute. God has no beginning and no end (Psalm 90:2). He simply exists outside the bounds of time and space as we know it.
This means God is immeasurably beyond our capacity to fully comprehend. The prophet Isaiah said God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours, as the heavens are higher than the earth (Isaiah 55:8-9). No matter how long we ponder the greatness of God, we will never be able to fully wrap our minds around the infinite depths of His character and power.
Yet even though God is infinite, He has chosen to reveal aspects of Himself that we can grasp. Through Christ, who is the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15), and through the Scriptures inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16-17), we can know God truly while acknowledging the parts of Him that remain mysterious.
God is Unlimited
To say God is unlimited means there are no restrictions on what He can do, except those placed upon Him by His own nature. For example, God cannot lie or deny Himself (Titus 1:2, 2 Timothy 2:13). But Scripture declares that nothing God purposes to do can ever be thwarted (Job 42:2). His power and wisdom know no bounds.
This means we should never assume God’s hands are tied. Even in situations that seem hopeless to us, God is able to act with unlimited might to accomplish His will. As Jeremiah proclaimed, nothing is too hard for the Lord (Jeremiah 32:17). We see God’s unlimited power in Christ’s miracles,His victory over sin and death on the cross, and His resurrection from the grave.
God’s unlimited nature is a comfort because we know that no problem or circumstance is beyond His ability to handle, if He chooses to act. It also inspires awe and fear, since we cannot control or fully predict our unlimited God. We can only marvel at His greatness and submit to His will.
God is Unmeasurable
To call God unmeasurable means He utterly surpasses any scale of measurement we could conceive. David proclaims in Psalm 147:5 that God’s understanding has no limit. We have no standard by which to define the full extent of God’s attributes.
For example, God’s holiness, justice, goodness, love, etc. exceed any concept we can grasp. Our measurements of even the best human reflections of God’s moral attributes fall infinitely short of defining the perfection with which God possesses them.
We cannot neatly categorize or comprehend God. He defies our labels and boxes. The unmeasurable God will surprise us with how He chooses to act, because His ways are higher than we can predict or calculate (Isaiah 55:8).
Our Infinite, Unlimited, Unmeasurable God is Worthy of Worship
The fact that God is infinite, unlimited, and unmeasurable means He alone is worthy of our supreme love, awe, reverence, and devotion. No human relationship or endeavor can ever fulfill us like the Creator who has no limits.
King David was in awe of the unsearchable depths of God’s greatness, proclaiming “such knowledge is too wonderful for me” (Psalm 139:6). His only response was worship. May we follow David’s example, as we ponder the beautiful mystery of our infinite, unlimited, unmeasurable God.
Though we can never fully grasp the full extent of who God is, we have the privilege of knowing Him personally through faith in Jesus Christ. Our infinite God wants us to enjoy relationship with Him both now and for eternity. As we yield more of ourselves to His loving Lordship, we will experience more of the spiritual blessings Christ died to give us.
Trusting Our Infinite, Unlimited, Unmeasurable God
Since God knows all, sees all, and can do all things, He is infinitely worthy of our trust. When we face hardship, we can be confident our unlimited God has the power to see us through if we rely on Him. When we are confused, we can ask Him for wisdom, knowing His understanding surpasses ours. When we feel lost, we can find comfort that our infinite God knows exactly where we are.
Yet because God is infinite and unmeasurable, trusting Him also requires humility. His ways are higher than our ways. What seems good and wise to Him may not make sense to our limited perspective. Like Job, we must trust God even when His sovereign plan confuses or hurts us (Job 1:20-22).
Our infinite God promises to work all things for our good if we follow Him (Romans 8:28). The more we surrender to living life His way, the more we will experience His infinite blessings.
Submitting to Our Infinite, Unlimited, Unmeasurable God
Understanding God’s infinite nature inspires awe and wonder. But it should also inspire submission. As finite creatures, we must humble ourselves and yield to the One whose understanding surpasses ours. Our posture toward our infinite God should be one of reverence and obedience.
We submit by making His glory our supreme purpose, not seeking our own (1 Corinthians 10:31). We submit by walking in obedience to His commands, trusting that His ways are perfect (Psalm 18:30). We submit by pursuing holiness and dying to our old sinful nature through the Spirit’s power (Galatians 5:16-18; Romans 6:5-11).
Our infinite God promises to give His Holy Spirit to those who humbly obey Him, enabling us to live glorious lives of meaning, purpose, and eternal impact (Acts 5:32). By submitting our limited perspective to God’s infinite understanding, we allow Him to fulfill His unlimited purposes through us.
Marveling at Our Infinite, Unlimited, Unmeasurable God
Though God is impossible for us to fully comprehend, what He has revealed of Himself gives us reasons to marvel. When Moses asked to see God’s glory, the Lord responded, “I will make all my goodness pass before you” (Exodus 33:18-19). God’s infinite glory and goodness leave us in awe.
God’s creation displays His eternal power and divine nature (Romans 1:20). His majestic heavens declare His limitless creative abilities (Psalm 19:1). His written Word reveals His perfect wisdom and surpassing worth (Psalm 19:7-10). Above all, God’s plan of redemption through Christ Jesus elicits never-ending praise for the depths of His mercy and love (Ephesians 1:3-10).
Our only appropriate response is to join all of creation in joyful worship of our infinite, unlimited, unmeasurable Creator and Redeemer. May we never stop marveling at the wonder of who He is.
Longing for Our Infinite, Unlimited, Unmeasurable God
Because God made us for Himself, we will only find complete satisfaction, meaning, and purpose in Him. Augustine summed this up in his famous prayer: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”
No human relationship, pleasure, or achievement can quench our soul’s thirst for God. But His living water satisfies completely (John 4:13-14). This side of eternity, we will still struggle with restlessness. Our longing for our infinite God won’t be fully fulfilled until we see Him face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12).
But we can receive tastes of eternal satisfaction now as we seek God’s face through prayer, study His Word, fellowship with His people, serve others, and enjoy His creation. Each act of worship brings us into closer communion with the infinite One we long for.
Our Infinite God Pursues Relationship With finite Creatures
If God is infinite, unlimited, and unmeasurable, why does He desire a relationship with finite, limited creatures like us? Scripture teaches that God created us to display His glory (Isaiah 43:7). He gains nothing from us, but graciously invites us to participate in who He is through faith in Christ.
God relates to us out of His own perfect fullness. The infinite Creator overflows with trillions of blessings He is eager to lavish on His beloved children (Romans 8:32). Our limited human relationships only faintly reflect the intimacy and delight found in knowing our infinite God.
We relate to our infinite God through faith, prayer, worship, serving others, enjoying creation, and representing Him to the world around us. He wants us to experience His love, beauty, wisdom and power. Our eternal destiny is glorious communion with our infinite God, and it starts now as we walk with Him daily.
Our Infinite God Allows Evil to Exist
If God’s wisdom and power are infinite, why does He allow evil and suffering in the world? This is a mystery no human mind can fully unravel. But Scripture helps us understand that God has His wise and loving purposes for allowing sin’s consequences for a season.
God permits evil to display both His justice and mercy (Romans 9:22-23). He allows Satan’s limited power to refine our character and strengthen our faith (Luke 22:31-32; 1 Peter 1:6-7). And He gives humans moral freedom, even though we often abuse it and hurt each other, because authentic love requires choice.
Most importantly, God uses the problem of evil to unfold history according to His sovereign plan of redemption through Christ. His infinite wisdom employs even evil for the glorious end of restoring creation and eliminating suffering eternally (Revelation 21:1-5). We trust Him fully, even when we cannot trace His unseen hand.
Our Infinite God Invites Us to Enjoy Him Forever
God created humankind for the purpose of knowing, worshiping, and enjoying Him forever. Unlike the rest of creation, we have been given the profound privilege of experiencing loving relationship with our infinite Creator.
Sin creates a barrier between us and God that must be removed for that relationship to happen. So God became human in Jesus Christ to provide the way for forgiveness and redemption (2 Corinthians 5:19). When we place our faith in Christ, we become God’s beloved children and begin to experience eternal life now (John 17:3).
Our infinite God invites us to enjoy making His glory known, both on earth and for eternity. As His redeemed people, we have the joy of reflecting His loving character to others. Someday we will participate in the grand celebration of His greatness. We have the privilege of enjoying relationship with the infinite One who is humanity’s true source of meaning, purpose, and satisfaction.
Conclusion
Our infinite, unlimited, unmeasurable God is far beyond human comprehension. Yet through Christ, God reveals Himself to us in ways we can grasp, know, and experience. When we begin to fathom His transcendent greatness and goodness, we cannot help but humbly worship Him.
Our only proper response toward our infinite Creator is reverent submission, trust, obedience, and joyful praise. We find purpose and satisfaction in life from pursuing intimate relationship with the One we are created for. His plan of redemption gives fallen people like us the privilege of glorifying and enjoying our wonderful Lord forever.
