The Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, contains visions seen by the apostle John that symbolically portray events leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ. A key part of these visions includes seven seals that must be opened before the end times unfold. Here is an overview of what each of the seven seals represent:
First Seal – The White Horse
The first seal is opened in Revelation 6:1-2: “I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, ‘Come!’ I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.”
This white horse and its rider represent the emergence of the antichrist and his early military successes. The antichrist is a key end times figure who will gain power and influence before revealing his true evil intentions later on. The bow indicates militaristic violence, while the crown signifies victory and authority. This seal likely covers the earlier parts of the tribulation period when the antichrist solidifies his regime.
Second Seal – The Red Horse
The second seal is described in Revelation 6:3-4: “When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, ‘Come!’ Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.”
This red horse symbolizes bloody warfare and violence on the earth. The large sword indicates mass slaughter and militaristic domination. As the antichrist’s power grows, he wages war against those who oppose him, resulting in great bloodshed. This seal represents the increasing unrest, conflict, and death as the tribulation progresses.
Third Seal – The Black Horse
Revelation 6:5-6 describes the third seal: “When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, ‘Come!’ I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, ‘A quart of wheat for a day’s wages, and three quarts of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!’”
This black horse and scales represent economic disaster and famine. The voice mentioning high prices for basic food staples indicates severe inflation and rationing. Even though luxuries like oil and wine are unaffected for the wealthy, the poor suffer from hunger and lack of daily provisions. The third seal points to scarcity, rationing, and starvation during the tribulation.
Fourth Seal – The Pale Horse
The fourth seal is opened in Revelation 6:7-8: “When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, ‘Come!’ I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.”
This pale horse represents death and massive population decline. The rider named Death is given authority to use all means, including famine, plagues, violence, and predatory beasts to kill a fourth of the world’s population. This indicates a level of calamity and death never before seen in human history. The fourth seal covers a period of exponential calamity and death on an apocalyptic scale.
Fifth Seal – The Martyrs
The fifth seal is described in Revelation 6:9-11: “When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, ‘How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?’ Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters, were killed just as they had been.”
This seal represents the many martyrs that will lose their lives during the tribulation for remaining faithful to Jesus Christ. Their plea for justice indicates they know God will avenge them in His perfect timing. The white robes signify God’s recognition of their righteousness and sacrifice. Many will conversions occur, but also intense persecution against believers during the end times.
Sixth Seal – Cosmic Disturbances
Revelation 6:12-14 portrays the sixth seal: “I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.”
Massive cosmic disturbances announce the sixth seal. Earthquakes, solar and lunar omens, falling stars, and shifting celestial bodies point to the undoing of creation itself. The world unravels at the seams as the tribulation nears its end and the full wrath of God begins to manifest. All of creation groans as the dawn of Christ’s return draws near.
Seventh Seal – Silence in Heaven
Revelation 8:1-2 transitions to the seventh seal: “When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.”
This extended silence in heaven represents the calm before the storm. The impending final judgments are so terrifying that all of heaven falls silent in solemn anticipation. After this ominous pause, seven angels are given seven trumpets to announce the full outpouring of God’s eschatological wrath upon the earth. The seventh seal ushers in the seven trumpet judgments that complete God’s end times program.
In summary, the seven seals encapsulate the tribulation period leading up to Christ’s second coming. The seals depict the antichrist’s rise, war and famine, widespread death, cosmic signs, the martyrdom of believers, and silence before the storm of God’s final judgments. As each seal is opened, the end times unfold in increasing intensity until the earth is prepared for Christ’s long-awaited return in power and glory. The seals present a sobering preview of the comprehensively cataclysmic events to transpire as this age draws to a climactic close.
