According to the book of Genesis, on the fifth day of creation God created the creatures of the skies and seas. This was an important step in God’s creative work, bringing forth birds, fish, and other marine life.
Here is what the Bible says about the fifth day of creation in Genesis 1:20-23 (ESV):
And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
On previous days, God had created light, sky, land, and seas. Now on the fifth day the seas and skies were populated with living creatures. God commanded the waters to “swarm with swarms of living creatures”, meaning abundant and diverse marine life. The Bible says God’s creation included both small sea creatures and “great sea creatures”, likely referring to large whales, sharks, and other ocean-dwelling animals.
The fifth day also saw the creation of “every winged bird according to its kind”. God filled the skies with every species of bird, from eagles to sparrows, parrots to penguins. The variety and complexity of life God created on this day was astounding. As with previous days of creation, God saw that what He had made was good.
The Genesis account highlights how God blessed the sea creatures and birds He had created and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply. This blessing enabled them to reproduce and fill the seas and skies. By the power of God’s word, the oceans, lakes, rivers, and skies suddenly teemed with fish, marine mammals, and all types of birds.
The fifth day of creation shows God’s creative power in designing vast numbers of unique creatures to inhabit a wide range of environments. The careful ordering of each stage of creation is seen, as God did not create fish until the waters were formed or birds until the skies were stretched out on day two. The fifth day also displays the generosity and love of God in lavishing the earth with multitudes of beautiful creatures of astounding variety.
In just one day God effortlessly brought forth the infinite diversity of sea life and birds that has filled humanity with wonder and awe ever since. The creation of fish on day five anticipates the creation of land animals on the next day, showing God’s forethought in preparing habitats and ecosystems, as fish would need to precede land animals as a food source. Similarly, birds and marine ecosystems would need to be established before the creation of land creatures on day six.
Throughout the account of the fifth day, God is presented as sovereignly speaking creatures into existence with purpose and design. His blessing demonstrates His desire that His creations flourish and multiply. The statement that God saw His creations as “good” indicates they fulfilled His perfect will. Though the Genesis account is simple, it points to the unfathomable depths of God’s creative genius and the beauty and complexity of all He fashioned in sky and sea on this day.
The creatures fashioned on the fifth day give glimpses of God’s power, wisdom, and care. They reveal God preparing the world stage for the crowning acts of creation still to come. The creation of land animals and humans on the sixth day will show the pinnacle of God’s creative work. As magnificent as the creatures of the seas and skies are, God will do even greater works on the coming days.
The full wonder of what God accomplished on this significant day is difficult to grasp, but it is foundational to the world as we know it. The innumerable fish and aquatic species continue to fill and define the seas, rivers, and lakes. The staggering quantity of birds, from the flightless ostrich to the soaring eagle, still color the skies with beauty and song. The creation of the fifth day was breathtaking in scope – and yet it was just a prelude to the awe-inspiring events of the sixth day when God created land animals and mankind.
While we may struggle to comprehend the extent and variety of ocean life and winged birds brought into being on the fifth day, we can still praise and worship the God who imagined and spoke them into existence. The fifth day stands as a testimony to the imagination, power, and love of the Creator. As we observe the creatures around us from sky, land, and sea, we can give thanks for the God who fashioned them for His glory and for the joy and sustenance of the humans He created on the pivotal sixth day of creation.
The creation account provides just a brief glimpse of the momentous work of the fifth day, but it makes clear this was a vital stage in God’s creative plan and the formation of life on earth. The seas teeming with fish and marine mammals, and the skies filled with soaring and singing birds, all came into being in a moment at His command. All of this occurred long before humans were on the earth to observe it.
Yet by faith we can visualize and marvel at the swarming shoals of fish, great sea monsters, and vast flocks of birds that suddenly filled the previously empty seas and skies at God’s word. The creation account contains profound truths in simple language, opening our eyes to God’s unlimited creative abilities and boundless imagination in designing the complex ecosystems of all that lives beneath the waters and on the wing.
The crowning jewel of creation was still to come, but on the fifth day God displayed His greatness through both the small sea creatures and enormous beasts of the ocean depths. The incalculable number and variety of the birds and fish created on this day defy human estimation.
As magnificent as this day was, the Genesis account conveys that even greater wonder was coming. On the sixth day, the final acts of creation would be completed with land animals and humans, bearing God’s own image. The creation story was building up to the pinnacle of God’s creative work in fashioning mankind. The creation of the living creatures of the seas and skies on the fifth day set the stage for the climax of the entire drama – the creation of humanity on the sixth day.
Yet God’s work on the fifth day has profound worth in its own right. The creatures fashioned on this day display the extravagance of God’s creativity, the wonder of His imagination, and the breadth of His divine ability. The creation account calls us to pause and worship the God of creation who spoke into being the myriad forms of life teeming in the waters and soaring through the air. The living creatures crafted on the fifth day give us tiny glimpses of the glory, wisdom, power, and care of the Lord who made them for His divine purposes.
Though the Genesis narrative is concise, it invites us to expand our vision and explore the magnitude of God’s handiwork on the fifth day. Even today, the oceans and skies are still being explored and new discoveries made. God’s creative brilliance is magnified with each new species identified and intricate ecosystem studied. The untold numbers of birds and sea creatures continue to inspire awe and fascinate the human observers God created just a day later.
The fifth day was a vital stage in forming the environment for the subsequent events of creation. The plants and vegetation created on day three needed birds and insects for pollination. The seas, now teeming with fish and aquatic life, provided a food source for the land animals soon to come. And both birds and fish were a preview of the conscious living souls yet to be created in land creatures and humanity.
The creative word of God on the fifth day filled the seas and skies with beauty, complexity, and abundance beyond measure. The diversity of marine ecosystems and intricately designed birds offer compelling glimpses of God’s artistic brilliance and infinite creative capacities. Yet in all these things, God’s magnum opus still lay ahead. On the sixth day He would perform the unimaginable – creating beings in His own image to rule His creation as His representatives.
The creation account affirms that the oceans and skies swarming and flying with living creatures fulfilled God’s purposes. All that lives and moves by His design and command is “good”. The fifth day resounds with the glory of God’s flawless creative abilities and the wonders of all He fashioned for His glory. The closing words of Genesis tell us the Creator surveyed all He had made at day’s end, and saw that it was very good. What an amazing thought!
The profound truths communicated in the creation narrative continue to shape the faith of believers. They remind us of our place in God’s creation and His purposes for humanity. The account of the fifth day invites us to pause and worship the Lord of heaven and earth. It calls us to renewed awe at the magnitude of God’s power, wisdom, care and creativity.
As people created to explore God’s world and cultivate His creation, we carry the image of the One who made it all. The creation account equips us to fulfill our calling under God’s authority. The living creatures fashioned on the fifth day also prompt us to consider God’s thorough preparation and forethought in creation. This encourages reverent stewardship of the world entrusted to our care.
The Genesis narrative provides the foundation for understanding our relationship to God as Creator and Lord. Though it offers only a brief glimpse of the fifth day, it highlights God’s unlimited power and divine purposes. As God’s image-bearers, we can respond in worship and obedience to the Author of all life. We can fulfill our mandate caring for this world God so abundantly prepared for us. The creation account calls us to know the Creator more fully through what He has made.
Two thousand years after Genesis was written, the apostle Paul reflected on creation and highlighted the purpose it serves. He wrote that God’s divine power and nature are clearly revealed through what was made, leaving humanity without excuse (Romans 1:20). The creation account calls all people to glorify God and gives profound meaning to our place in His plans.
The significance of the fifth day still resonates today. The birds and fish created then continue to flourish in the skies and seas of our world. Their endless variety and aesthetic beauty reflect the extravagance of their Maker. Their design points to the engineering genius of the divine Creator. Their abundance speaks of God’s care in lavishing the earth with more species than we can number.
The living creatures crafted on this day fulfill purposes we are still discovering. Scientists estimate over 90% of ocean species and over 18,000 bird species are yet to be identified and studied. This “undiscovered country” invites us to keep exploring with wonder the magnitude of God’s creative imagination. The staggering scale of the fifth day inspires worship for the God whose designs surpass human understanding.
Yet even a child can grasp the simple beauty of God’s handiwork and respond in praise. We do not need to fully comprehend the Creator’s work to appreciate the gift of creation. Our limited human perspective cannot begin to grasp the wonders God has made, yet His majesty and goodness are revealed through all He has fashioned for His purposes.
On the fifth day of creation, God’s spoken word called myriad forms of life into being, filling the waters and skies to overflowing. The untold numbers of species brought forth on that day resound in teeming, swarming, soaring praise to the Maker of heaven and earth. His handiwork puts eternity into our hearts, reminding us we are creatures fashioned to live for His glory.
Two thousand years after creation, the resurrected Jesus stood on the shores of Galilee, served fish for breakfast, and commissioned a fisherman named Peter with the words “Feed my sheep”. In that tender scene, echoes of the first creation reverberated. The fish, the sea, the people – all were cherished creations of God. All were designed for relationship with Him. And all served His divine purpose on that pivotal day.
Today we stand on this side of eternity, as they did. We live some 2000 years downstream from creation’s dawn. But we can still pause in wonder on the banks of the sea and strain our ears to catch the ancient harmonies of the fifth day. We can lift our eyes to the flocks winging overhead and remember the Creator who fashioned them in all their diversity. And by faith we can envision the swarming, teeming seas and skies called into being by His word so long ago.
We are invited to worship the God who spoke light into darkness and life into emptiness. The One who commanded the seas to surge with creatures beyond number, and filled the skies with vibrant, singing birds. The Lord of the stars who crafted each creature great and small with divine care. As we reflect on the fifth day, we stand in awe of the Creator who is calling all things in heaven and earth to declare His praise.
And we respond in joy. For by the word of the Lord the heavens and earth were created. By the breath of His mouth, the teeming waters and glorious skies. How majestic is His name in all the earth! Our voices soar and dive and leap to join creation’s soaring symphony of worship.
