When Jesus spoke of coming to give us an “abundant life” in John 10:10, He was promising so much more than simply an earthly life of material abundance, health, and prosperity. The abundant life Jesus offers is a spiritual abundance that overflows to touch every area of our lives.
At its core, the abundant life Jesus promises refers to the fullness of life available in a relationship with God through faith in Christ. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). This abundant life is characterized by joy, peace, hope, meaning, and belonging that come from being reconciled to God and knowing Him intimately as a Father.
This spiritual abundance in relationship with God overflows to impact other areas of our lives. Here are a few ways the abundant life shapes our lived experience:
- An abundance of meaning and purpose. Life can feel aimless without God, but with Him life takes on eternal significance and meaning. “For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36).
- An abundance of hope. In Christ, we have a living hope and a guaranteed inheritance that does not fade or perish (1 Peter 1:3-5). This hope anchors our souls through the ups and downs of life.
- An abundance of satisfaction. As we follow Christ, He satisfies the deepest thirsts of our souls in a way that earthly pleasures, possessions, or accomplishments never could. “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again” (John 4:14).
- An abundance of joy. The joy Jesus gives isn’t fleeting happiness based on circumstances, but an enduring delight in His salvation and presence. “Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory” (1 Peter 1:8).
- An abundance of peace. As we abide in Christ, He gives us a peace that surpasses understanding and guards our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6-7). This peace carries us through the storms of life.
- An abundance of love. We receive and experience the love of Christ, and His love is infinite andtransforming (Ephesians 3:17-19). This love overflows from our lives to others.
- An abundance of spiritual blessing. In Christ, we have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, including adoption, redemption, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:3-14).
- An abundance of strength and power. By His Spirit at work within us, we have more than enough strength for every trial and are able to do all things through Christ who gives us power (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
- An abundance of guidance and wisdom. As we commit our lives fully to Christ, He promises to guide us in the way we should go and give us wisdom for every dilemma we face (Proverbs 3:5-6).
While the abundant life is spiritual at its core, it touches every practical aspect of living. When we walk closely with God, relying fully on His grace and strength, we will experience more of His blessings even in tangible areas like relationships, health, finances, career, and more.
For example, as we grow in generosity motivated by God’s generosity toward us, we reflect His heart and experience the truth that “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Serving others and meeting tangible needs in Jesus’ name can be an outflow of the abundant life. Our relationships are also transformed by the love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness of Christ at work within us.
However, the abundant life is not a guarantee of perfection or perpetual blessing in all earthly matters. After all, even faith-filled saints of Scripture experienced poverty, sickness, persecution, and injustice in this fallen world. The abundant life transcends circumstances, sustaining joy, peace, and purpose even through suffering.
Paul emphasized this in Philippians 4:11-13, saying: “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
The abundant life Jesus promises is not about being exempt from hardship or having an overflow of earthly wealth. It’s about experiencing fullness of joy, meaning, and hope in Him alone – a spiritual abundance nobody can take away from us.
When we have God’s presence and power at work within us, we have more than enough to not just survive but thrive and overflow with love as ambassadors for Christ. We are no longer defined by external circumstances but by an eternal spiritual reality anchored in our unbreakable relationship with God.
Jesus does care deeply about our experience on earth as well as eternity. As an extension of His promise of spiritual abundance, He also promises to meet our physical needs as we seek His kingdom (Matthew 6:31-33). According to His will and timing, God graciously provides for His children and leads us to green pastures and still waters (Psalm 23:1-2).
But Scripture makes it clear that difficulties are inevitable, even among the most righteous. The rain falls on the just and unjust alike (Matthew 5:45). Our lives here require patient endurance and faith (Hebrews 10:36-39). Lasting contentment and strength cannot be found in earthly abundance alone – our unshakeable joy must flow from spiritual abundance in Christ.
As we walk closely with Jesus, following His example and embracing His promises, we gain an eternal perspective that infuses our lives with incomparable peace, purpose, and meaning. Our lives become anchored in the spiritual abundance He freely gives His children while on earth. And one day, we will enter fully into the everlasting abundant life of heaven where:
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4).
May we live each day on earth with hearts overflowing with the spiritual abundance Christ alone provides. And may we eagerly, yet patiently, await the glorious fulfillment of His promise when we will see Him face-to-face in eternal splendor.
