The verse “He who promised is faithful” comes from Hebrews 10:23 and speaks to the unchanging nature of God’s faithfulness and the surety of His promises. Though circumstances may change, God’s character does not. When God makes a promise, He keeps it, even when that seems impossible from a human perspective. This verse reminds us that no matter what comes our way, we can trust God because He is faithful to fulfill what He has said.
There are several key truths we can draw from this verse about God’s faithfulness:
1. God’s faithfulness is rooted in His unchanging character
The word “faithful” in Hebrews 10:23 literally means “trustworthy.” God is completely reliable, steadfast, and dependable. He does not waver or falter. His faithfulness flows from His immutable, or unchanging, nature. He proclaims of Himself in Malachi 3:6, “For I the Lord do not change.” James 1:17 tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” God is the Father of lights. Unlike the sun which rises and sets, God is constant. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). His faithfulness is an expression of His perfect immutability.
2. God’s faithfulness means His promises are trustworthy
Since God does not change, then it logically follows that His Word does not change. What God has spoken, He will bring about. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” Jesus said in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” God’s promises do not have an expiration date. They remain valid for every generation. When God says He will do something, we can bank on it because His faithfulness ensures His promises are trustworthy.
3. God’s faithfulness guarantees the fulfillment of His plans
Not only can we trust God’s promises, we can trust that His plans will come to fruition. Isaiah 14:24 tells us, “‘The Lord of hosts has sworn: As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.'” In Isaiah 46:11 God says, “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.” When God purposes something, His faithfulness assures He has the power to make it happen. As Philippians 1:6 says, “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.” God’s faithfulness guarantees all He has started, He will finish.
4. God’s faithfulness secures our salvation
Our greatest hope is found in the fact that God is faithful to complete the work of salvation He began in us. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” Calling refers to God drawing us to salvation. Since He called us, He will be faithful to make us holy and sanctified completely. Our security in Christ rests on God’s faithfulness to finish saving us. As Philippians 1:6 said, what God starts, He finishes. Salvation is a work of God from beginning to end, not of our own efforts. His faithfulness secures it.
5. God’s faithfulness gives us confidence to persevere
Because we know God is faithful, we can have assurance that He will give us everything we need to endure to the end. 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises, “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability.” His faithfulness ensures we are never given more than we can handle with His help. We also have the confidence that He will provide the strength and grace we need to finish strong. As Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:24, “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” God finishes what He started in every believer.
6. God’s faithfulness means all His warnings are true
Just as God’s promises are trustworthy, so are His warnings. God warns against rejecting Christ in Hebrews 10:26-27, saying, “For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment.” Because God is faithful, we can be assured that if we turn away from Christ, judgment awaits. His faithfulness confirms that His warnings are just as true as His promises. What He says He will do, He will certainly do, for better or worse.
7. God’s faithfulness gives meaning to human faithfulness
As image-bearers of God, faithfulness is to reflect His character. Our acts of faithfulness derive meaning and purpose because they mirror the faithfulness of God. Paul calls us to “Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Our labor is not in vain because God is faithful, and our faithfulness points back to His. His complete dependability gives significance to our faithfulness.
8. God’s faithfulness in Christ frees us from sin’s penalty
We could never be faithful enough to earn salvation, but Christ was faithful on our behalf in living a perfect life and dying for our sins. Galatians 2:16 says, “We know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.” The faithfulness required for salvation could only be accomplished by Christ. His faithfulness frees us from the penalty of sin. God’s justice and mercy meet perfectly at the cross because of the faithfulness of Christ.
9. God’s faithfulness gives us access to His throne
Because of Christ’s faithfulness, we are given access to come boldly before God’s throne. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace.” Christ’s faithfulness removes all barriers to God’s presence. We now can approach Him confidently as a Father because of our adoption into His family. God’s faithfulness expressed through Christ gives us His righteousness and the privilege of His presence.
10. God’s faithfulness means all His commands are for our good
Since God is perfectly faithful, we know His commands are always given in love for our well-being, not out of malice or manipulation. Deuteronomy 6:24 says of God’s laws, “The LORD commanded us to do all these statutes that we may fear the LORD our God, for our good always.” Even commands that seem difficult are given in faithfulness because He knows obedience brings blessing. His faithful character is proof that all His commands aim for our ultimate good.
God’s faithfulness is the bedrock truth on which every other promise of Scripture rests. Our hope stands secure only because the God who promised is faithful. Though we waver, fail, and falter, His plans, promises, and warnings remain steadfast. When our faith feels feeble, we can anchor our trust in His faithfulness. The God who promised remains utterly and perfectly faithful.
