Applied kinesiology is a technique in alternative medicine that uses muscle testing to diagnose illness and determine appropriate treatment. Practitioners test muscles to ascertain imbalances or weaknesses that may indicate problems elsewhere in the body. While applied kinesiology has become popular in some circles, the Bible does not specifically mention or endorse this practice.
However, there are some biblical principles that can inform a Christian perspective on applied kinesiology:
1. The body is fearfully and wonderfully made by God
The Bible teaches that human beings are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and that the human body is fearfully and wonderfully made by Him (Psalm 139:14). As such, the body has an innate God-given wisdom and functionality that enables self-healing. Applied kinesiology seeks to test muscle function to identify imbalances in the body. From a biblical perspective, the notion of an interconnected bodily system created by God with the capacity to self-regulate has merit.
2. God designed the body with the ability to heal
The Bible demonstrates that God desires for people to be healthy and whole. When Jesus Christ walked the earth, He healed many people of disease and affliction, demonstrating the compassionate heart of God toward suffering and illness (Matthew 4:23). God built into the human body systems that enable self-healing, given the right conditions. Applied kinesiology aims to identify and correct imbalances in the body to support the natural healing processes God has instilled.
3. Take care of your body, the temple of the Holy Spirit
The Bible calls the body the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). As such, Christians have a mandate to take reasonable care of the physical body God has given them, honoring it as a dwelling place of His Spirit. Applied kinesiology provides one possible avenue to discern the body’s condition and make appropriate interventions to support wellbeing.
4. Test everything, hold on to what is good
1 Thessalonians 5:21 instructs believers to test everything and hold on to what is good. As with any healthcare practice, Christians should thoughtfully test and examine applied kinesiology. Any elements of applied kinesiology that prove true and bring health can be embraced.
5. Be wary of unbiblical philosophies or practices
Colossians 2:8 warns believers to watch out for hollow and deceptive philosophies and practices that are according to human tradition rather than Christ. Some applied kinesiology protocols incorporate Eastern mysticism, energy work or New Age concepts at odds with biblical principles. Christians should thoughtfully examine the presuppositions and techniques of applied kinesiology practitioners to ensure alignment with biblical values.
6. Prayer combined with natural remedies
2 Kings 20 tells of Hezekiah being healed from illness after prayer and the application of a poultice. James 5:14-15 instructs those who are sick to call upon church elders to pray for them and anoint them with oil for healing. Applied kinesiology uses natural means of testing muscles and making corrections to support healing. When combined with prayer and discernment, it may be a viable option for some believers.
7. Work in partnership with medical professionals
The Bible encourages collaborating with others who have complementary skills and knowledge. Doctors provide expertise in medical testing and prescription medications that can complement muscle testing and natural remedies from applied kinesiology practitioners. Christians should seek wise counsel when making healthcare decisions (Proverbs 11:14).
8. Focus on whole person health
Biblical health involves more than physical wellbeing alone. Jesus said He came that people may have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). Applied kinesiology focuses on correcting underlying imbalances to restore wellness. But true health must also consider emotional, mental and spiritual elements. The Bible prescribes faith, a fruitful thought life, rest, and wholesome relationships as part of an integrated, holistic approach to health.
9. Motives matter more than methods
Jesus accused certain teachers of law of focusing on outward cleanliness while neglecting the condition of their hearts (Luke 11:39). Likewise, Christians seeking healthcare should beware of methods or practitioners that are more concerned with procedures than the motive of bringing glory to God and caring for people in need. When evaluating applied kinesiology, one should consider not only the techniques but the heart motivations behind it.
10. True healing comes from God
Ultimately, the Bible makes it clear that true healing comes from God Himself (Exodus 15:26). No healthcare approach provides a cure-all. Applied kinesiology may have merit when combined with other healthy practices under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. But it should not replace dependence on God, the Great Physician and ultimate Source of healing.
In summary, applied kinesiology warrants thoughtful examination by Christians desiring to make wise healthcare choices. Certain techniques may prove helpful when used discerningly alongside other health-promoting practices. Any approach to physical health must also be accompanied by emotional, mental and spiritual wellness practices centered in biblical values. Most importantly, the body of Christ should always look first to the power and compassion of God as the Source of all healing.
