Despair is a feeling of complete hopelessness or lack of hope. It can arise from various life circumstances that seem too difficult to overcome. According to the Bible, despair is often linked to a lack of faith and trust in God. Here is an overview of some key things the Bible says about despair:
Despair is a common human experience
Many godly people in the Bible struggled with feelings of despair, including David (Psalms 42:5), Jeremiah (Lamentations 3:18), Job (Job 7:15), Moses (Numbers 11:15), Elijah (1 Kings 19:4), and Jonah (Jonah 4:3). Even Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). So despair is a natural human response to pain, grief, frustration, or hardship. The Bible validates these feelings as part of our human experience.
Despair can lead to depression and loss of hope
Prolonged despair that is not addressed can lead to depression and a lingering sense of hopelessness. Several figures in the Bible succumbed to deep depression and loss of hope, like King Saul who was tormented by an evil spirit (1 Samuel 16:14), and Judas who felt so much despair that he committed suicide after betraying Jesus (Matthew 27:5). The Bible warns about the dangers of unchecked despair leading to depression and loss of hope.
Despair often stems from a focus on circumstances
According to the Bible, despair arises when we become consumed with our difficult circumstances and take our eyes off God. Examples include the Israelites despairing when facing giants in the Promised Land (Numbers 13:31-33), David despairing when facing threats from Saul (Psalms 42:5), and Elijah despairing when persecuted by Jezebel (1 Kings 19:4). In each case, they lost hope because they looked at their circumstances rather than looking to God.
God understands our despair
The Bible makes clear that God understands our human frailty and despair. David says he was “poured out like water” in his despair (Psalms 22:14). Isaiah 53:3 prophesies that the coming Messiah would be “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.” Jesus was deeply moved at the grief of Lazarus’s sisters (John 11:33-35). Hebrews 4:15 says Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses. So we can take comfort that God understands our frailty and despair in difficult seasons of life.
Despair shows our need for God
Our despair reminds us how desperately we need God. The Psalms are full of laments crying out to God from a place of despair. “Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord” (Psalm 130:1). “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Psalm 42:2). Our despair shows we cannot rely on our own strength. Like the prodigal son who hit rock bottom, we may find ourselves turning back to the Father when nothing else can help us (Luke 15:17-20). Our despair reveals our need for God’s strength, comfort and deliverance.
God promises to be with us in despair
One of God’s most frequent commands in Scripture is “Do not be afraid.” When we are in despair, God promises to be with us to give us strength, comfort, and hope. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you.” Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid.” God does not always take away the source of our despair, but He promises to walk with us through it.
Putting our hope in God lifts despair
The antidote to despair according to the Bible is to put our hope and trust in God instead of our circumstances. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope.” Psalms 42:5 says, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation.” Hebrews 6:19 calls hope in Christ an “anchor for the soul.”
God gives us strength to endure suffering
The Bible says God will equip us with strength to endure suffering and hardship that can lead to despair. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 says, “We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.” Through faith in Christ, we gain an eternal perspective on despair.
God has good plans to give us hope
God promises that even in the midst of despair, He has good plans to give us hope. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Romans 8:28 promises God works all things for the good of those who love Him. Through faith, we can trust God’s purpose in trials that may tempt us to despair.
We wait patiently for the Lord to renew hope
When overwhelmed with despair, the Bible advises us to wait patiently and hopefully for God to act in His timing. Lamentations 3:25-26 says, “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Despair tempts us to act rashly, but God wants us to trust Him and wait for His redemption.
Christ promises us eternal hope
As Christians, we can endure despair because we have the promise of eternal life and hope in Christ. Titus 1:2 says we have “hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began.” 1 Peter 1:3 says God in Christ has given us “new birth into a living hope.” No circumstance in this life can take away the living hope we have through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior.
We overcome despair by God’s strength
By depending on God’s strength rather than our own, He enables us to overcome despair. 2 Corinthians 1:8-9 says, “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God.” When we turn to Jesus in our despair, He gives us supernatural strength, comfort, and hope to endure suffering.
Believers in Christ have God’s peace to combat despair
Jesus promises His followers a supernatural peace that can help calm our despair if we abide in Him. John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” This peace of God transcends human understanding and guards our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7).
The Holy Spirit comforts us in despair
For Christians, the Holy Spirit dwells within us to bring comfort, hope and reassurance in times of despair. John 14:16 calls Him “another Counselor” who will abide with us forever. The Spirit groans and intercedes for us in our weaknesses (Romans 8:26). As we cry out to God in despair, the Holy Spirit comforts us with God’s presence.
We can come boldly to God’s throne of grace
The Bible invites us to come boldly before God’s throne to receive grace and mercy in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” In despair, we can come confidently to the throne of grace to obtain God’s help and strength.
We look forward to a future glory free from despair
As Christians, we can endure present sufferings and despair because we know it is temporary and we have an eternal hope. 2 Corinthians 4:17 calls our afflictions “light and momentary troubles.” Romans 8:18 says, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” Revelation 21:4 promises a future where there is no more despair. This hope sustains us.
We are called to encourage others who face despair
The Bible not only gives hope to those in despair but calls Christians to encourage others struggling with hopelessness. 2 Corinthians 1:4 says God “comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” If you know someone in the grip of despair, reach out with love, comfort, and reminders of hope in Christ.
Prayer for deliverance from despair
Here is an example prayer based on biblical truths that can be prayed in moments of despair:
“Lord Jesus, I am feeling completely hopeless and overwhelmed with despair in my current situation. I confess I have taken my eyes off of you and begun focusing only on my circumstances. Thank you that you understand my frailty and despair. I know you walked this earth and experienced pain, sorrow, and despair. You know my heart even better than I know it myself.
I ask you now to fill me again with your Holy Spirit. Give me the strength, wisdom, hope, and comfort only your Spirit can provide. Forgive me for trying to rely on my own inadequate strength rather than yours. You promise to never leave me nor forsake me, so I ask you to make your presence and comfort known to me now in this time of need. Help me to trust that you have good plans for me, even when I cannot see it.
I proclaim that you are the God of hope who can do far more than I ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). I declare that no present suffering or despair can take away the future glory you promise (Romans 8:18). I ask for renewed faith, hope, and trust in you. I know you weep with those who weep, so I lay my cares at your feet, trusting you will sustain me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
