The title “God Most High” is used throughout the Bible to refer to God’s supreme authority and sovereignty over all things. Here are some key reasons this title is used to describe God:
1. God is above all other gods
The title emphasizes that God is supreme over all false gods and idols. In ancient times, people worshipped many false gods and believed in pantheons of gods who ruled over different realms. But the Bible makes it clear there is only one true God who rules over all creation (Isaiah 44:6). Calling God “Most High” highlights that He alone is truly God, high above all pretend gods.
2. God is supreme over all earthly rulers and authorities
Human kings and rulers often begin to think they are supreme. But God is called Most High to remind that He is the highest authority, even above kings and presidents (Psalm 83:18). No earthly ruler can thwart or frustrate God’s ultimate plan.
3. God is sovereign over all nations
Throughout history, nations have risen and fallen according to God’s decree. So God is called Most High because all nations are under His sovereign control (Genesis 14:18-22). No nation is outside of His authority.
4. God is seated high above the heavens
The title Most High points to God’s lofty position in the heavens, high above even the highest angels and heavenly beings (Hebrews 7:1). All creation is under His feet as He sits enthroned in glory.
5. God is supreme over all powers in the spiritual realm
God’s Most High status means He reigns over all spiritual beings – both good angels and demonic forces. Satan himself must submit to God’s sovereign authority (Job 1:6-12).
6. God rules from the highest place
Most High reminds us that God’s throne room is in the highest place imaginable, far above the earth and heavens (Isaiah 57:15). No power or height can compare to God’s exalted position.
7. God sees all things from His lofty vantage point
Since God sits enthroned on high, He has a unique vantage point to see and know all things below Him (Psalm 102:19). No detail on earth escapes His watchful eye.
8. God deserves the highest praise and glory
The name Most High is a way to give God the supreme glory due His name (Psalm 47:2). We exalt Him alone as the Most High King over all.
9. God provides refuge and deliverance from His lofty position
We can call to God Most High in times of trouble, knowing He is able to safely deliver and protect from His exalted position (Psalm 9:2). He is our sure stronghold and security.
10. God will judge perfectly and rightly from His elevated throne
At the end of time, God Most High will judge every person with perfect justice and equity (Hebrews 7:1). His vantage point ensures He will judge without mistake.
In summary, the title God Most High highlights many truths about God’s supreme status and authority over all creation and mankind. There is no higher power, throne, or name than Almighty God Most High. Recognizing Him as Most High should lead us to deeper awe, worship, and trust in Him.
God Most High sits enthroned in the heavens, sovereign over the nations. He is exalted far above all gods and rulers, seeing all from His lofty vantage point. God Most High deserves our highest praise and allegiance. No name is higher than the Most High God.
The book of Daniel provides one of the clearest examples of God being called Most High. When King Nebuchadnezzar became arrogant, God humbled him by making him live like an animal. After being restored, the king praised God Most High, saying:
“His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” (Daniel 4:34-35 ESV)
Nebuchadnezzar recognized God Most High’s complete sovereignty over all earthly kingdoms. We must humble ourselves likewise before our Supreme King.
In the New Testament, Mary’s song of praise exalts God as Most High when she learned she would give birth to Jesus:
“He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.” (Luke 1:51-53 ESV)
Mary acknowledged God’s power to exalt or humble anyone He chooses. As Most High, He raises up the lowly and humbles the proud.
One of the most famous uses of Most High is when Melchizedek blessed Abram saying:
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” (Genesis 14:19-20 ESV)
Here we see God Most High presented as the possessor or owner of everything. There is nothing outside His sovereign oversight.
The psalmist frequently recognized God as Most High:
“I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” (Psalm 57:2 ESV)
“For the Lord Most High is to be feared, a great king over all the earth.” (Psalm 47:2 ESV)
“Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord— that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:18 ESV)
These verses help us understand that God Most High deserves our highest praise and allegiance. There is no power greater than our Most High God.
Isaiah’s prophesies about the future millennial kingdom also use the title Most High:
“In the days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house will be the highest of all—the most important place on earth. It will be raised above the other hills, and people from all over the world will stream there to worship. People from many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of Jacob’s God. There he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion; his word will go out from Jerusalem. The Lord will mediate between nations and will settle international disputes. They will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war anymore. Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord!” (Isaiah 2:2-5 NLT)
God Most High will establish His kingdom on earth and bring perfect peace through the rule of His Son Jesus. All nations will stream to Jerusalem to worship the Most High.
So in summary, recognizing God as Most High should lead us to worship Him, submit to His sovereignty, find refuge in Him, and reverently fear Him. No name and no power are higher than God Most High.
